America's Cup 2027 in Naples: Watching the Racing from Castel dell'Ovo
The Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup will be sailed in Naples in 2027 β the first time the Cup has been held in Italy β and the racecourse is the Bay of Naples, with Castel dell'Ovo at one end of it. For anyone who knows this castle as the oldest in the city, that is a strange and wonderful sentence: the world's oldest international sports trophy, contested on the water the fortress has looked out on for centuries. The dress rehearsal has already been sailed here, too β the Preliminary Regatta Naples took place on this same bay in September 2026.
This page sticks to what the organisers of the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup, and the Comune di Napoli, have actually published: the year and the published dates, the racecourse, where the Race Village goes, what sits at the team bases in Bagnoli, and where you can realistically stand to watch from the castle side of the bay. Where a detail has not been announced β the daily start times for 2027, for instance β it says so rather than guessing.

What is happening in Naples in 2027
The event's own name is the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup, and Naples is the host city. On its venue page the organiser puts the significance plainly: for the first time ever the Louis Vuitton Cup and the Louis Vuitton America's Cup Match will be sailed in Italy, a country with one of the most colourful and enthusiastic America's Cup histories. In 2027, the page continues, the world will look to Italy and specifically to Naples β the capital of the Campania region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most ancient cities in Europe β as it becomes the host city for the world's oldest international sports trophy.
The published calendar has several parts, and they are easy to run together. The organisers' venue page says that "in spring and summer 2027" the world will look to Italy as the host country. The Match itself begins on Saturday 10 July 2027: the January 2026 presentation had it finishing over the weekend of 17β18 July, and the America's Cup Partnership's 28 September 2026 announcement puts the conclusion, depending on the scoreline, at 19 July 2027 at the latest. The racing around it is now dated too: the Louis Vuitton Cup opens on 22 May 2027 and its final is to be concluded by 4 July, the Youth America's Cup runs 2β6 June and the Women's America's Cup 5β9 July. That matters, because a great deal of speculative scheduling circulates around an event of this size: the dates are fixed, and the daily start times are not. Check the organiser's own pages before you book anything you cannot move.
The bay has already had its trial run. The Preliminary Regatta Naples was raced from 24 to 27 September 2026 and has been and gone β so it is a preview of how this water races, not something still to attend. It was a one-design regatta: equalised AC40 yachts, a nine-boat fleet, eight scheduled fleet races and three races every afternoon from 2pm CEST, with the two highest-scoring boats going through to a single winner-takes-all final. The AC40 is the one-design class the preliminary regattas are sailed in β foiling boats, in the organisers' description, capable of speeds above 40 knots with a four-person crew; the 2027 America's Cup itself is sailed in AC75s.
The racecourse: the Bay of Naples, with the castle at one end
The organisers call the venue the Bay of Naples, and they describe it as a close-to-shore racecourse: the wording on the venue page is that it "will give fans a rare chance to witness the AC75s at full speed just metres from the waterfront", with Vesuvius as a backdrop and Capri and Ischia framing the horizon. Local conditions, the organisers add, promise steady sea breezes funnelled through the bay, with tactical shifts and occasional thermal winds.
The sentence that matters most for this site is on the organiser's own Naples page, in its section on the bay:
π° In the organisers' words: "Along the waterfront, Castel dell'Ovo marks one end of the course and begins the city's three-castle walk."
Put the two descriptions together and the shape of the 2027 Cup becomes clear. The racing happens in the bay, not out at sea; the boats come close enough to the shore to be watched from it; and the castle stands at one end of the course rather than somewhere in the middle distance. That is the reason a castle guide has a page about a yacht race β and the reason the seafront in front of the walls is, on paper, one of the best free grandstands in the city.
The Race Village and the team bases at Bagnoli
The Race Village will be positioned along the extensive seafront of downtown Naples, and the organisers name the street it occupies: "The stunning ribbon of road that stretches around the waterfront, the Viale Francesco Caracciolo, will be transformed into the ultimate Race Village, making use of all the promontories and unique features of the area to create grandstand viewing opportunities, whilst housing the Official Main Stage for sailor and trophy presentations."
The September 2026 preliminary regatta is the clearest picture of what that looks like on the ground. The village was centred on Rotonda Diaz (also known as Mappatella Beach) as the centre-piece for the main stage, stretching out along the Via Francesco Caracciolo, which the organisers say will be closed to traffic. Every race day brought a dock-out show, sailor presentations, interviews and local entertainers to the main stage, with the live race broadcast, commentary and analysis on big screens. At the end of racing the dock-in show recapped the day with the winning crews on hand, and food and drink concessions and the official merchandise store stayed open. Entry, the organisers state, is "completely free to all".
π‘ One street, two spellings. The venue page heads the promenade "Viale Francesco Caracciolo"; the regatta page writes "Via Francesco Caracciolo". Both are the organisers' own pages and both describe the same seafront road, so do not be thrown if you see either on a sign or a schedule.
West of the centre, the second cluster of sites is at Bagnoli, the western seaside quarter of Naples. The organisers describe a former industrial area converted into the technical heart of the Cup: a world-class technical facility for the teams, the AC75 yachts, a superyacht marina, and a dedicated Women and Youth base for the AC40 yachts to launch from. The same area carries the AC Tech FanZone, with interactive areas, large jumbotron screens carrying the racing and pre-event shows, and food and retail options.
| Site | Where | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Race Village | Viale Francesco Caracciolo, the seafront of downtown Naples | The promenade becomes the village: the Official Main Stage for sailor and trophy presentations, grandstand viewing opportunities, big screens, food, drink and merchandise. Entry was free for the 2026 preliminary regatta; 2027 arrangements are not yet published. |
| Main stage at Rotonda Diaz | Rotonda Diaz (also known as Mappatella Beach), at the mid-point of the Via Francesco Caracciolo promenade | Centre-piece for the main stage at the 2026 preliminary regatta: dock-out and dock-in shows, sailor presentations, interviews and local entertainers. |
| Team bases | Bagnoli, the western seaside quarter | Technical facility for the teams, the AC75 yachts, a superyacht marina, and a dedicated Women and Youth base for the AC40 yachts. |
| AC Tech FanZone | Bagnoli | Interactive areas, large jumbotron screens for the racing and pre-event shows, plus food and retail. |

Where to watch from the castle side
The single most useful thing to know is that you do not need a ticket, a boat or a seat in the village to see the racing. The organisers' regatta page lists the way to watch on land as the Race Village, waterfront viewing areas and fan zones. The course is close to shore and the castle marks one end of it, so the seafront between the castle and the village is the natural front row.
The Match is not the only racing here. The Louis Vuitton Cup opens on 22 May 2027, and the organisers say the event uses the same Bay of Naples racecourse throughout, so this seafront is a front row from 22 May until the Match concludes by 19 July β not only for the Match itself.
The castle's own terraces would otherwise be the finest elevated view in the city, and they are the one spot you should not count on to be reachable.
Castel dell'Ovo's interior is not confirmed open. The Comune di Napoli's official page still lists the castle as closed to the public until further notice for renovation work, and gives no reopening date. On 20 September 2026 Mayor Gaetano Manfredi announced that the castle would reopen and stay open, with guided visits by booking while restoration continues in other parts of the complex; as of 30 September 2026 no booking channel had been published. Check our opening hours and current access status page, or telephone the castle on 081 7953581, before planning a trip around going inside.
What remains is still good. The waterfront in front of the walls, the causeway out to the castle, and the little harbour at Borgo Marinari all put you at the end of the course the organisers point to β with coffee, a table and a seafood lunch a few steps behind you. If you are coming specifically for the view rather than the racing, our sunset viewing guide covers the angles and the light along this same stretch of water.

On timing: the preliminary regatta ran three races every afternoon from 2pm CEST. The 2027 calendar is published β the Louis Vuitton Cup from 22 May, the Youth and Women's events in June and early July, the Match from 10 July β but daily start times for 2027 have not been announced, so treat the afternoon pattern as the shape of a race day rather than as a start time for the Cup itself. Whatever the schedule, an afternoon here in spring or early summer means sun on the water, the castle behind you and the fleet in front of you.
What it means for the seafront
Viale Francesco Caracciolo is not a venue that gets built; it is a road that becomes one. The organisers' plan is to use the promontories and features of the waterfront to create grandstand viewing, with the main stage on the promenade itself, and at the 2026 preliminary regatta the stretch occupied by the village was closed to traffic. Expect the same order of disruption for the Cup: a seafront given over to the event, and the city reorganising itself around it.
Traffic measures for the 2027 Cup will be announced locally, close to the event, and we are not going to print a closure date or a diversion that nobody has announced. What you can rely on is the pattern: restrictions along the lungomare while the racing is on. Check the Comune di Napoli's channels, and our Naples transport guide, in the weeks before you travel.
Expect the neighbourhood to be full. A spring and summer event of this scale on the city's front doorstep will fill the restaurants of Borgo Marinari and the hotels along the waterfront β places that are busy on any fine evening. Book rooms and tables rather than trusting to luck, and if you are travelling to see the racing, make the seafront your base rather than commuting to it.

How to get there
The Comune lists Castel dell'Ovo as reachable by public transport β Metro Line 1 or Metro Line 6, Municipio stop β or by car. For the Cup, Municipio is also the sensible arrival point for the seafront: you come up out of the station at Piazza Municipio, walk down to the waterfront, and turn west along the lungomare, with the castle and then the Race Village ahead of you.
If the event closes roads or fills the seafront with traffic, the metro becomes the reliable option rather than a fallback. Our how to get to Castel dell'Ovo page has the walking routes from the station and from the historic centre, and the tickets and practical guide covers access on foot, by metro and by bus.
If you are already at the castle, you are already at the event. The castle, Borgo Marinari and the Race Village sit on one continuous waterfront, so the walk between them needs no plan at all.
Practical tips: what to confirm before you book
- Confirm the dates on the organiser's own pages. The Louis Vuitton Cup opens on 22 May 2027 and the Match starts on Saturday 10 July 2027; the America's Cup Partnership's 28 September 2026 announcement puts the Match conclusion, depending on the scoreline, at 19 July 2027 at the latest. Check the organiser's own pages for daily start times before you book anything you cannot move.
- Book accommodation early. A published 2027 window is enough for the city's waterfront hotels to fill up for the event weeks. Our accommodation guide covers the areas within walking distance.
- Check the castle status before you build a plan on it. Public access to the castle interior is not confirmed β see our opening hours and current access status page. Everything outdoors β the causeway, the waterfront, Borgo Marinari β is open and free.
- Watch the Comune for traffic measures. Seafront restrictions for the event will be announced locally, not years in advance.
- Check before you buy anything sold as a Cup ticket. Free entry was stated for the 2026 preliminary regatta village; we found no published admission details for 2027 on americascup.com, so compare any offer against the organiser's own pages first.
