Castel dell'Ovo Tickets & Fees: Free Entry, and Currently Closed
Prices verified October 2026. Castel dell'Ovo's admission status and closure are confirmed against the Comune di Napoli (the municipality that manages the site); nearby castle prices are official city or museum figures.
π§ Current status: CLOSED for renovation
Castel dell'Ovo is closed to the public until further notice for renovation work β the Comune di Napoli's own page states "Castel dell'Ovo Γ¨ chiuso al pubblico fino a data da destinarsi per lavori di ristrutturazione". A reopening for early 2026 was targeted but had not been confirmed as complete when this page was verified in October 2026.
Official source: comune.napoli.it. Always check there before travelling, as the reopening date can change at short notice.
Is there a ticket or an entry fee?
No β and there never has been. Admission to Castel dell'Ovo has always been free. There is no ticket product to buy, and the City of Naples' own ticket portal sells admission to Castel Nuovo but not to Castel dell'Ovo. That is the most important pricing fact about this castle: the correct amount to pay at the gate is nothing.
β οΈ Do not buy a "Castel dell'Ovo ticket"
Third parties sometimes sell "skip-the-line" or "Castel dell'Ovo tickets". Entry has always been free, so any paid product is really a bundled guided tour, a walking tour, or a booking fee. If you want a guide, fine β but understand that you are paying for the guide, not for admission. Never pay simply to get in.
What you can still see for free while the interior is closed
The closure applies to the castle interior. The monument's setting remains open, and it is genuinely one of the best free views in Naples.
- The exterior and the 100-metre causeway connecting the castle to the mainland β a favourite spot for photographs of the Bay of Naples.
- The Borgo Marinari, the historic fishing village at the castle's base, still open for dining and a wander among the moored boats. See our dining guide for what is around it.
- The Via Partenope waterfront, with the castle as its backdrop.
ποΈ When it reopens
Once the renovation finishes, entry will remain free and self-guided. Temporary exhibitions held inside the castle have sometimes required a separate ticket; when the castle is open, budget for that possibility rather than a set figure, as no price is published officially. For the historic opening hours, see our opening hours page.
Nearby paid alternatives β official prices
While Castel dell'Ovo's interior is closed, these are the legitimate fee-charging sites within easy reach, with the official admission figures.
| Site | Admission | Notes |

| Castel Sant'Elmo | β¬5 full / β¬2 reduced | Star-shaped fortress with the best panoramic view over the city. |

Getting here
The castle sits at Via Eldorado 3, on the Santa Lucia waterfront. The simplest approach is Metro Line 1 to Municipio, then a 10β15 minute walk along Via Partenope; buses 140, 154 and C25 also serve the Santa Lucia area. Full routes, and what is walkable from the historic centre, are on our getting here page.
β οΈ Metro and parking fares
We deliberately do not quote a Naples metro (ANM) fare or a nearby car-park rate on this page: no official current figure could be confirmed at the time of checking, and a stale number is worse than none. Check the ANM app or the car park's own board on the day.
What there is to buy β and what there isn't
For admission, nothing. When open, the castle is free and self-guided, with information plaques in Italian; English-speaking visitors are better served by our complete visitor guide. If you hire a guide, confirm that the tour includes something beyond the free entry before paying β a boat or panoramic tour that merely passes the castle is not admission to it. Guided tours sold around Naples typically start from about β¬25 per person.
Currency
Prices are in euros (β¬). As a rough guide, β¬1 β US$1.12 (approximate; recompute on the day you travel).
