Seeing Castel dell'Ovo from the Sea: Naples Boat Tours & Harbour Cruises
Castel dell'Ovo sits on the islet of Megaride at the head of the Bay of Naples, and the eastern end of the seafront is where the city's sightseeing boats leave from: the little harbour at the castle's own base, Borgo Marinari, and the larger Molo Beverello passenger port a few hundred metres away. Several cruises sail right past the castle walls. This page explains which one to book, where it departs, what it costs and what you actually see from the deck.
Why take to the water to see the castle
The castle was built on Megaride, an islet of two rocks joined by a great arch and linked to the mainland by a bridge to Via Partenope. From the promenade you see the landward face; from the sea you see the whole profile at once — the two rocks, the arch, the long western rampart, and Vesuvius rising behind the city.
For the history behind what you are looking at, read our Castel dell'Ovo history page first. If you are coming mainly for photographs, a boat gives you angles you cannot get on foot; the photography guide covers the best light from the shore.
Where the boats leave from: two departure points
Almost every cruise that shows you the castle starts at one of two places, and the difference matters:
- Borgo Marinari — the small marina tucked directly under the castle walls, and the closest look at Castel dell'Ovo, because you are already at its base.
- Molo Beverello — the main passenger port, next to the Maschio Angioino, where the larger sightseeing cruises and the island ferries depart.
A third option, Mergellina, is used by some aperitif and charter cruises that sail back towards the castle from the west.

The Alilauro “Naples from the Sea” cruise (from Molo Beverello)
Alilauro — the same company that runs the ferries to the islands — operates the official sightseeing product, “Naples from the Sea”. It departs from and returns to Molo Beverello, so there is no transfer to arrange at either end.
- Route: Maschio Angioino, Castel dell'Ovo, the Santa Lucia waterfront, Mergellina and Posillipo, Palazzo Donn'Anna, Villa Volpicelli, Villa Rocca Matilde, Villa Rosebery, the Gaiola islets, Trentaremi Bay and Nisida island, with Vesuvius behind the city.
- Duration: approximately 1 hour 40 minutes, a panoramic non-stop circuit — you stay on board throughout.
- Commentary: on-board audio narration describes each place as you pass it.
- Price: €25.00 full fare; €15.00 reduced for children aged 4–12.
- Departure times: 09:55, 12:25, 14:55 and 17:30.
- Season: the operator currently lists the service as running from 1 to 31 July on Saturdays and Sundays, then every day from 1 August to 20 September. Check the current dates before planning a trip around it.
- Booking: online through the operator, by phone on +39 081 497 22 79, or at the Alilauro ticket office at Molo Beverello. Booking ahead is advised in high season.
Full details and live booking are on the operator's own site: Alilauro — Naples from the Sea. If you want to reach the islands rather than cruise the bay, see our separate Naples ferry connections guide.
Cruises that leave from Borgo Marinari, right under the castle
For the closest possible look, leave from Borgo Marinari itself. Boats depart from the quay at the castle's base and head into the bay before turning along the waterfront, so Castel dell'Ovo is the first thing you see from the water rather than the last.
One established 75-minute “Gulf of Naples” panoramic cruise boards here on a boat with a spacious covered and shaded deck and panoramic seating, with live commentary in Italian and English. Leaving the harbour you pass the castle from the sea, then follow the Posillipo coastline with its villas and coves out to the island of Nisida, with long views of Vesuvius before returning to Borgo Marinari. Departure times, season and price are set by the operator and change seasonally — confirm them when you book. Because you board under the walls, this option pairs well with a walk through the village and its restaurants: see the Borgo Marinari guide.
Aperitif cruises, swim stops and private charters
- Aperitif cruises. A two-hour evening cruise, usually departing from Mergellina, circles the castle for a full 360° view and serves an aperitif on board. These are sold mainly through booking platforms, where the price depends on the date.
- Swim and snorkel tours. A roughly three-hour small-group trip leaves from Borgo Marinari and combines the castle with a swim or snorkel stop in the bay.
- Private charters. One operator offers a half-day or full-day private charter along the Naples coastline for up to six people, at €440 (half day) or €500 (full day). The price covers the skipper, fuel and soft drinks; the boat carries snorkelling masks and a sun deck; boarding is at the rotunda on Via Nazario Sauro; and the season runs from about 20 April to 10 October. Castel dell'Ovo is the first viewpoint on the route.
The aperitif and swim tours above are currently sold through resale platforms, so their prices are promotional and vary by date. Wherever you book, check the operator's own page as well and confirm the boarding point before you travel.
Practical tips for a bay cruise
- Book ahead in season. Summer is peak time and the afternoon departures fill up first.
- Watch the weather. The bay can be breezy even on a warm day; if you are prone to seasickness, take the shorter, sheltered harbour cruise rather than a long open-water run.
- Photography. Late-afternoon and “golden hour” departures give the best light on the castle; a seat on the starboard side heading west keeps the ramparts in view. See the photography guide for settings and angles.
- Combine it with the seafront. Both departure points are a short walk from the Via Partenope promenade, so you can pair the cruise with a shore-side stroll and a meal at Borgo Marinari.
- About the castle itself. The cruises show you the exterior from the water. To visit inside, check the castle's current access arrangements on our opening hours page before you go.
- More to do nearby. Our top things to do near Castel dell'Ovo page lists the sights within walking distance of both departure points.
Frequently asked questions
Can you see Castel dell'Ovo from a boat?
Yes. Several cruises pass directly beneath the castle, and the Alilauro “Naples from the Sea” route lists Castel dell'Ovo as one of its stops. Because the castle sits on an islet, a boat gives you its seaward walls, the arch between the two rocks and the bay behind it.
Do any boats leave from the castle itself?
Yes — the marina at the castle's base, Borgo Marinari, is a departure point for shorter bay cruises, including a 75-minute panoramic tour. The larger sightseeing cruises leave from Molo Beverello, the main port a short walk away.
How long is the cruise past the castle?
The shortest cruises from Borgo Marinari run about 75 minutes. The Alilauro sightseeing cruise from Molo Beverello lasts about 1 hour 40 minutes as a non-stop circuit. Aperitif cruises run around two hours, and private charters can be half a day or a full day.
Do I need to book in advance?
It is strongly recommended in summer, when the most convenient departures sell out. You can book online, by phone (Alilauro: +39 081 497 22 79) or at the ticket office at Molo Beverello. Outside peak season, same-day places are usually easier to find.
